Standing stones, part of a circle at Avebury,Wiltshire. The site at Avebury is the largest megalithic construction in the UK,and has been designated a World Heritage Site. There are three concentric stone circles, the largest of which contains 100 boulders. The circles are surrounded by a 427 metre diameter earthwork, with a 9 metre deep ditch and 5 metre high outer bank. A 2.4km- long avenue lined with 100 more stones approaches the site. It is thought that the site was in use between 2,600BC and 1,600BC,and may have had a religious significance | |
