Iris scanning. Researcher Chris Seale uses Iriscan technology in a miniaturised BT device to scan the iris of his eye as part of a computer recognition system test. He is at BT Laboratories in Martle- sham Heath,England. A person's iris is unique. This camera scans the iris in a few seconds; a computer then divides the iris into 8 concentric circles to recognise iris features even when they are compressed when the pupil dilates. The iris is compared against a database of irises in under 3 seconds, forming a powerful identification system. The system could be used at bank ATMs or integra- ted into a mobile phone.
