False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human connective tissue, showing collagen fibres, which appear as an irregular mass of yellow strands. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) are interspersed between the fibres. Connective tissue provides metabolic and structural support for other tissues and organs throughout the body; more distinct & specialised systems include bone, blood, tendons & ligaments. Fibres comprising connective tissue are of 3 types: collagen, reticular & elastic. Where properties of strength & elasticity are required (as with tendons & ligaments),the fibres are densely & regularly packed. Magnification: X 440 at 35mm size | |
