Lacrimal gland. Light micrograph of a section through a lacrimal gland with peripheral nerves. The glandular tissue (dark pink, irregularly shaped) is grouped into lobules separated by thin walls of connective tissue (long, white lines). The glandular tissue contains ductules (white) which transport the glandular secretion to the larger ducts (not seen). Running from bottom left to top right is a peripheral nerve. Lacrimal glands secrete tears to keep the front of the eyeball clean. Tears contain lysozyme,an enzyme that destroys bacteria. Magnification unknown | |
