Light micrograph of a section through the thick skin comprising the sole of the human foot. Skin varies regionally in thickness, colour & by presence of hairs, glands & nails - all of which reflect differing functional needs. Here, protection of the foot is characterized by the thickened, cornified, outer layer of the epidermis (top, red),composed of flattened cell remnants that have migrated up from the underlying active epidermis (purple). The epidermis is supported by a layer of connective tissue, the dermis (pink,at bottom) which is rich in blood vessels and sensory receptors. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size | |
