Mouse embryo. Light micrograph of a 9.5 day old embryo removed from the uterus of a mouse (Mus musculus). The embryo has not yet developed organ systems or limb buds, but the head and tail are differentiating and the heart bulge is present (centre). The embryo attaches to the uterine epithelium about 5 days after ovulation and the pregnancy lasts 3 weeks. Within the uterus the embryo lies inside a fluid-filled sac, known as the amniotic cavity, which is enclosed by double membranes. The fluid protects the embryo against the pressure of the internal organs of the mother and from any injury from the mother's movements. Magnification: x5 at 35mm size | |
