Mouse embryos. Light micrograph of 9.5 day old embryos removed from the uterus of a mouse (Mus musculus). The embryos have not yet developed organ systems or limb buds, but the heads and tails are differentiating and heart bulges are present. The embryos attach to the uterine epithelium about 5 days after ovulation and the pregnancy lasts 3 weeks. Within the uterus the embryos lie inside fluid-filled sacs, known as amniotic sacs, which are enclosed by double membranes. The fluid protects the embryos against the pressure of the internal organs of the mother and from any injury from the mother's movements. Magnification: x3 at 35mm size | |
