Human zygote. Light micrograph of a human zygote (the primitive embryo) produced by in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). A zygote is the cell produced when a sperm fertilizes an ovum. This cell is about 0.1mm in diameter and contains all the genetic material inherited from the sperm and ovum. In a normal pregnancy, the zygote travels along the woman's fallopian tube and divides to form a ball of cells known as a blastocyst. The blastocyst implants into the uterus wall & develops into the foetus. In IVF,fertilisation is performed in culture medium and the blastocyst im- planted directly into the uterus wall, usually at the 16 cell stage. Magnification: unknown | |
