Embryo genital system. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the external genitalia in a 9-10 week embryo. At this stage the male and female external genitalia are not differentiated. The system here is destined to become the female genitalia or vulva. The round tip at top centre, the genital tubercle, will elongate slightly to form the clitoris. The long and narrow cavity at centre, the urogenital groove, will form the vestibule (vaginal opening) and its surrounding tissue will develop into the labia minora. The genital swellings at bottom will form the labia maiora. Magnification: x67 at 6x7cm size | |
