Human chromosomes. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the full complement of 46 human chromosomes. These thread-like structures occur in the nucleus (upper right) of every human cell. They carry coded genetic information in the form of genes. Each chromosome consists of two strands (chromatids) joined in a region known as the centromere or kinetochore. Chromosomes can make exact copies of themselves while the cell is resting between cell divisions. When chromosomes divide, the centromere splits longitudinally. Apart from sex cells, each human cell contains 46 chromosomes,23 from the mother,23 from the father. Magnification: x1,260 at 5x7cm size. x5,000 at 8x12ins | |
