Male chromosomes. Coloured light micrograph of a normal trypsin/leishman banded male karyotype, the full complement of male chromosomes arranged in numbered homologous pairs. They are numbered 1- 23 from top left to bottom right & are obtained by matching unpaired chromosomes photographed at the metaphase stage of cell division. Each member of a homologous pair is similar in length & banding pattern. Male & female sets differ only in the sex chromosome (bottom right pair); a female is labelled XX: a male XY. Each human cell contains 46 chromosomes,23 of maternal & 23 of paternal origin. Magnification: x2400 at 6x7cm size | |
