False colour light micrograph of the full complement of normal male chromosomes, photographed during the metaphase stage of mitosis (cell division) for purposes of compiling a karyotype,a document of all 46 chromosomes arranged in homologous pairs. Here the chromosomes are unpaired; matching might be done by cutting up the image & pairing according to length, shape & banding pattern - banding is due to trypsin/leishman treatment. The 23rd pair contains the sex chromosome & is denoted XY in males, where one member of the pair is much smaller than its partner. Magnification: X1428 at 35mm size. Compare with P656/005,which shows finished karyotype | |
