Corona radiata cells. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of human cumulus corona cells which once surrounded a mature egg. Here, they are seen in culture,24 hours after the human egg was fertilised. Many of these cells are elongated or star-shaped due to a rich actin component in their cytoplasm. In the ovary, cumulus corona cells serve to support and nourish the developing egg, forming a "corona radiata" (radiating crown) around the egg. When the egg is released from the ovary, some of the corona radiata remains attached to the egg but falls away after fertilisation. Magnification: x170 at 6x7cm size. x215 at 4x5 | |
