Animal sperm,as sketched by Leeuwenhoek. The sketch was made in 1679,and shows the sperm of rabbit (figs.1-4) and dog (figs.5-8). Antony van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) was a passionate microscopist. He used single lenses,rather than compound elements,as the former gave better image quality at that time. He ground these ultra-small lenses himself,something over 400 of them in his lifetime,and kept active in research until his death at age 90.
