Cervix epithelium. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of epithelial cells on the cervix of a 35 year old woman. This is the endocervical canal, the passage from the uterus to the vagina. The dark pits are the openings of endocervical glands. These glands secrete a thin mucus during ovulation which facilitates the passage of sperm into the uterus. After ovulation, the glands secrete a thick mucus which hinders sperm cells' progress beyond the vagina. The large dark green cells are proliferating. The pink areas are supportive stroma exposed during the sample's preparation. Magnification: x100 at 6x7cm size | |
