Menopausal uterine gland. Coloured scanning elect- ron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a gland (blue/yellow) in a menopausal woman's uterus. Many of these glands are found in the stroma (pink) which supports the uterine lining (endometrium). The cells lining the gland have long microvilli. In a fertile woman, the glands secrete glycogen, mucus and fats which provide an ideal environment for a developing embryo. The menopause is the end of the fertile period of a woman's life, caused by ceased production of the hormone oestrogen. Magnification: x1200 at 6x7cm size | |
