Menopausal uterine gland. Coloured scanning elect- ron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a gland (grey/yellow) in a menopausal woman's uterus. The uterine lining (endometrium) is supported by the stroma (pink),made up of connective tissue. It contains many of these tubular glands, although their number and activity decreases after the menopause. In a fertile woman, the glands secrete glycogen, mucus and fats which provide an ideal environment for a developing embryo. The menopause is the end of the fertile period of a woman's life, caused by ceased production of the hormone oestrogen. Magnification: x120 at 6x7cm size | |
