Post-menopausal ovary. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a 69 year old post-menopausal ovary. Much of the surface epithelium (red) has been removed to reveal the underlying stroma (green),called the tunica albuginea. This layer is largely made up of connective tissue. The ovaries produce ova (eggs) in fertile women, although this process stops after the menopause, usually around the age of 50. The menopause may cause anxiety, vaginal dryness, hot flushes and a loss of libido. Magnification: x60 at 6x7cm size | |
