Cervical secretory cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of secretory cells in the epithelium of the cervix. The cervix is the canal that links the uterus to the vagina. These secretory cells (green) are covered in microvilli (finger-like projections). On the microvilli are particles of mucus (red and yellow),the product being secreted. Mucus is secreted in response to oestrogen hormones and it is maximal at the time of ovulation. At this time the mucus is most hydrated in order to ease sperm migration.
