Cervix epithelium. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of squamo-columnar epithelium of a healthy human cervix. This is the ectocervix (exocervix),the area bordering the cervical canal and within the vagina. It is the junction of two types of epithelial cells:flattened squamous cells (upper left),and columnar cells (lower right). The squamous cells occur in many layers and peel off to be replaced by cells beneath them. The simple columnar cells form one layer,are covered in microvilli,and secrete mucus. Columnar cells are found nearest to,or inside,the cervical canal. Magnification: x220 at 6x7cm size. x290 at 4x5ins
