The human ovarian follicle (containing the ovum,or egg) after 6 days development. The follicle is situated below the surface of the ovarian wall, moving toward the surface as it matures, finally protruding just prior to ovulation, when it is released into the fallopian tube (where potential fertilisation may occur). The maturing of the egg is a continuous process regulated by the endocrine system: a potential ovum arises in the germinal epithelium of the ovary, with a clump of cells (the primary follice) forming around it. At this stage many follicles degenerate; those that do not enlarge & become fluid-filled,until ovulation occurs at 10-15 days | |
