False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of alveolar ducts & sacs within the human lung (the ducts appear as the larger dark areas, with numerous alveoli (air sacs - smaller dark areas) continuous with the alveolar duct along its length. Alveoli are numerous (millions per lung) & adjacent ones would share the same blood capillary & connective tissue septum (red areas). It is in this extensive capillary bed of the pulmonary alveoli that the major function of the lung is performed; ie the exchange of gases across the very thin epithelium between air & blood.
