Colonic glands: false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the colonic mucosa, showing the openings of numerous tubular glands or crypts of Lieberkuhn (the same name as the glands of the small intestine). The colonic glands function to produce faeces by absorbing water, vitamins & electrolytes from the liquid residue of the small intestine. The surface of the mucosa which forms each of the circular glands is composed of both absorptive & goblet cells, the latter secreting a lubricating mucous which becomes increasingly necessary as the contents become progressively dehydrated.
