Healthy ureters. Coloured urogram (X-ray) of healthy calyces of the kidneys and ureters of the human urinary tract. At top centre is the spine of the thorax, with ribs coming off it at angles. At centre left and right (yellow) are the branching calyces of the kidneys. Calyces are the collecting ducts for urine within the kidneys. The kidneys themselves are not seen here. Descending from the calyces are the ureters (yellow),tubes that carry urine from each kidney to the bladder. This urogram was made by injecting an X- ray opaque substance which highlights the urinary tract. This X-ray technique is used to look for disorders of the urinary system, such as kidney stones | |
