| Epithelium of bladder. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of epithelial cells of the human urinary bladder. Polygonal-shaped cells are seen with their borders delimited. These cells are specially adapted for their role in the bladder. Their surface contains a lattice of plaques,hexa- gonal particles which gives the cell membrane a cobble-stone appearance. The cell membrane is also highly folded. Both the plaques and folds enable the cell membrane to accommodate large changes in surface area,which occur during distention or contraction as the urinary bladder fills or empties.
