Normal intravenous urogram (IVU),an X-ray image of the human abdominal area which displays the drainage of urine from both kidneys down the ureters towards the bladder. IVU requires the prior intravenous injection of an iodine-based,radio-opaque contrast medium, which is excreted through the kidneys in urine. The branches of the renal pelvis - the structures of the kidney into which urine is drained - & the ureters (25-30 cm long in adults) are clearly visible on both sides. IVU tests kidney function & reveals stones (calculi) in kidneys or ureters & other malfunctions of the urinary tract | |
