Kidney. Artwork of a longitudinal section through a human kidney. The functions of the two kidneys are to excrete urine and to regulate water, electrolyte and acid-base balance. At left are the renal artery (red) and the renal vein (blue). The outermost layer of the kidney (dark red) is the fibrous capsule. Inside of the capsule is the cortex (pink). The next layer (red) is the medulla which contains the nephrons. Blood is filtered by the nephrons and water & important substances are reabsorbed. The resulting urine is received by the renal pelvis (yellow) and conveyed through the ureter (lower left) to the bladder (not seen) | |
