Glomeruli. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of glomeruli (red) and arterioles (blue) from a kidney. Glomeruli are knots of tiny capillaries that act as blood-filtering units in the kidney. Fluid from blood passes out of the glomerulus into a cavity inside a Bowman's capsule (not visible),from where it drains into a long, looped tubule. Essential substances and a variable quantity of water are reabsorbed from the tubule and the remainder drains to the bladder as urine. Magnification: x280 at 7x6cm size.
