Kidney. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a kidney papilla. It is through the small apertures (upper centre right) found on the tip of a papilla that urine passes from the kidneys to the ureter. The ureter then conveys the urine to the bladder where it is stored temporarily. In each kidney 10-15 papillas are found on average. The urine secreted by the kidneys contains the end products of the metabolic activities and also toxic substances such as urea and chloride. The secretion of urine also controls the level of body fluids by eliminating any excess of water. Magnification: x30 at 6x7cm size. x50 at 4x5ins | |
