Light micrograph of a section through a baby's kidney, which has had a stain injected into the artery that has coloured the glomeruli sited on either side. The glomeruli, tight knots of blood capillaries surrounded by Bowman's spaces, are the principal filtering units of the kidney. Excess water & metabolic waste are filtered from the blood & passed to the renal tubules (not seen here),where some reabsorption of water & molecules occurs. The highly convoluted tubules are attached at one end to glomeruli & at the other to collecting ducts, which discharge the filtrate (urine). Magnification X100 (at 35mm size) | |
