Light micrograph (MSB stain, longitudinal section) of a baby's kidney, showing several glomeruli. The glomeruli, tight knots of blood capillaries surrounded by Bowman's spaces, are the principal filtering units of the kidney. Excess water & metabolic waste are filtered from the blood & passed to the renal tubules, seen here surrounding the glomeruli, where some reabsorption of water & molecules occurs. The highly convoluted tubules are attached at one end to glomeruli & at the other to collecting ducts, which discharge the filtrate (urine). The black dots are cell nuclei.
