False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a glomerulus in the human kidney; the top part of the Bowman's capsule (a cup-like covering) has been removed to show the coiled mass of underlying capillaries comprising the glomerulus. The glomerulus forms the primary part of the nephron, the functional unit of the kidney, and is the site of filtration of waste products from the blood into the kidney tubules via the Bowman's space (dark area surrounding glomerulus). Waste products are drained from the kidneys in urine, filtered blood being returned to the general circulation. Magnification: X 300 at 35mm size | |
