Light micrograph of a section through a human kidney, showing a glomerulus (the large, encapsulated oval) & adjacent renal tubules. A glomerulus consists of a network of capillary loops supported by specialised connective tissue called mesangium. This knot of capillaries is an invagination into a capsule known as the Bowman's capsule,a single layer of flattened cells resting on a basement membrane. The space between the capillaries & the capsule is known as Bowman's space. Blood plasma is filtered in the capillaries,& the filtrate passes into the Bowman's space & from there into the renal tubules. Magnification: x80 at 35mm size | |
