Light micrograph of beta cells from an islet of Langerhans in the mammalian pancreas. Beta cells are the sites of synthesis & secretion of the hormone insulin & are clustered in regions known as the islets of Langerhans. Here, beta cell nuclei appear as dark red circles. This section was treated with a monoclonal antibody (labelled with a fluorescent dye) that binds to insulin. The yellow glow reveals a wide distribution of insulin throughout the cells, indicating that insulin is contained in numerous secretory granules that carry the hormone towards the cell membrane.
