Glycogen storage. Light micrograph of a section through liver cells (hepatocytes) showing stored glycogen (bright pink). Glycogen is the form in which the liver stores excess sugar. Too much sugar in the blood is toxic. Blood sugar rises after a meal, and under the influence of the hormone insulin the sugar is converted into the polysaccharide glycogen. When blood sugar starts to fall,or at times of increased demand, the glycogen is broken down to sugars again under the influence of the hormone glucagon. Magnification unknown | |
