Gall bladder. Coloured X-ray of the human abdomen, showing the gall bladder. The gall bladder appears distended and pear-shaped at upper left (coloured green). It lies in the abdomen underneath the liver, although here pressed against the diaphragm it is seen between the two lower thoracic ribs. Vertebrae of the spine are seen at right. The gall bladder is a muscular sac which collects and concentrates liver bile. Bile is secreted into the duodenum through the common bile duct, where it aids in food digestion by emulsifying fats. The gall bladder was injected with a contrast dye in order to show up on X-ray film | |
