False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an intra-hepatic bile duct within a lobule of the liver. At centre (green) is a bile duct passing through the network of liver cells (blue) that go to make up a liver lobule. Liver lobules are func- tional units of cells arranged to filter blood. Blood cells can be seen (red). Toxins and waste products are cleared from the blood,to produce bile. Bile is secreted by liver cells into tiny canaliculi which converge into larger intrahepatic ducts (as here) & finally a bile duct carries bile to the gall bladder. Bile is an important diges- tive enzyme. Magnification: x1,125 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x1,800 at 4x5 inch size | |
