Light micrograph of normal human spleen. The spleen is a lymphoid organ surrounded by a capsule from which ingrowths called trabeculae penetrate inwards (red). The capsule and trabeculae consist of elastic fibre tissue and smooth muscle, whereby the shape of the organ is controlled. The spleen contents consist of red pulp made up mainly of red blood cells in a mesh of reticular fibres, and white pulp - lymphocytes and plasma cells. The bulk of the field here is red pulp; white pulp appears as regions of more intense blue stain; the boundary between red & white pulp in human spleen is diffuse. Magnification: x20 at 35mm size | |
