False colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a sinusoid in the human liver, showing a hepatocyte (liver cell,at top) bathed with blood (green). Liver sinusoids are lined with a discontinuous layer of sinusoid lining cells - one appears at bottom left, above several densely stained red blood cells. The large nucleus of the hepatocyte appears blue; packages of stored glycogen are purple and vacuoules containing triglyceride are coloured green. The primary functions of an hepatocyte is in the storage of glycogen (metabolized from excess glucose) and processing of lipid. Magnification: X 2000 at 35mm size | |
