False colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a sinusoid in the human liver, showing a hepatocyte (liver cell,at top) bathed with blood (blue). Liver sinusoids are lined with a discontinuous layer of sinusoid lining cells - one appears at bottom left, above sveral densely stained red blood cells. The large nucleus of the hepatocyte appears green; packages of stored glycogen are pink-red and vacuoules containing triglyceride are coloured yellow. The primary functions of an hepatocyte is in the storage of glycogen (metabolized from excess glucose) and processing of lipid. Magnification: X 2000 at 35mm size | |
