Villus of small intestine. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a sectioned villus of the small intestine. The villus' epithelium (lining, green & pink) consists of mucus-producing goblet cells as well as absorptive cells. The centre of the villus, the lamina propria (white & light green),contains blood and lymphatic vessels which absorb digested food products. Villi are finger-like projections from the intestinal wall which greatly increase the absorptive surface of the small intestine. This is the ileum, the final section of the 6 metre long small intestine. Magnification unknown | |
