Duodenum. Coloured X-ray of a healthy human duode- num, part of the small intestine. The duodenum (red) passes from left, along the bottom of the image to right. Partially-digested food is passed into the duodenum from the stomach (red outline at centre right). Bones appear green. In the duod- enum the acidity of the stomach contents is neut- ralised and digestive enzymes break down food into simpler chemicals for absorption. The duodenum's lining has tiny projections (villi) which greatly increase the surface area for absorption. The remaining food is passed on to other parts of the small intestine. The patient was given a barium meal containing the X-ray opaque barium sulphate | |
