False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the interior of the human jejenum,a section of the small intestine, the site of absorption of the products of digestion. The jejunum is deeply folded & lined with tongue-shaped projections or villi, which are covered by absorptive & goblet cells. The villi are a structural modification to increase the effective absorptive & secretory surface of the mucous membrane. The secretions of the goblet cells acts to protect & lubricate the gut & help in the formation of faeces. Approximate magnification: x70 at 6x7cm size | |
