False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a neuro-endocrine cell in the human duodenum. The cell has a large round nucleus (partly seen at right, coloured green). The cytoplasm (blue) contains a cluster of cytoplasmic granules (small red bodies). Neuroendocrine cells are found in the epithelium of the gut & their function is still poorly understood. The granules which characterise them are known to contain a variety of hormones which the cells produce & release into the blood stream. The granules are known as neuroendocrine or neurosecretory granules. Magnif- ication: x8800 at 6x4.5cm size | |
