Stomach mucosa. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a cross section through the mucous membrane (or mucosa) lining the inside of the human stomach. The mucosa is the thick yellow layer. This consists of gastric glands that extend through the mucosa to open at the top as gastric pits. These glands produce acid and digestive enzymes which are used to break down food. Epithelial cells (brown,at top) produce a thick layer of mucus which lubricates and protects the stomach lining. Large blood vessels (at lower centre) are seen immediately above the muscular layer that makes up the stomach wall. Magnification: x40 at 5x7cm size | |
