Stomach. Illustration of the stomach dissected to show the inner lining,& the muscle layers of the external wall. The sheet of yellow fatty tissue (bottom) is the greater omentum. The folded gastric lining (mucosa) at centre is the site of secretion of acid, digestive enzymes, hormones and mucus. The mucus protects the stomach lining from digestive processes. In the foreground the longitudinal and circular smooth muscle layers are cut away to show the oblique smooth muscle fibres. Innervated by the vagus nerve (yellow),the muscle layers enable the stomach to churn food around. ***ALL MORAL RIGHTS ASSERTED.
