Tongue papillae. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of filiform papillae. These cone- shaped structures are found on the surface of the tongue. They are far more numerous than the taste buds (not seen). Filiform papillae serve a purely mechanical function, giving the tongue its rough feel. Tongue papillae are covered in a layer of squamous epithelial cells, seen forming the scaly base of these papillae. Bacteria (green) are also seen accumulating on the tongue surface. Large numbers of bacteria can form a visible layer that coats the surface of the tongue. Magnification unknown | |
