Tongue papillae. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a resin cast of the surface of the tongue, showing its filiform papillae. They project from the tongue's upper surface, giving it its rough texture. Taste buds are located between the papillae at the sides and base of the tongue. Underneath this surface layer, the tongue is composed of muscle fibres that attach it to the mouth and enable it to move. The cast was made by injecting resin into the tongue, followed by the chemical digestion of the surrounding tissues. Magnification: x70 at 6x7cm size | |
