Tongue surface. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of filiform papillae on the dorsal surface of the tongue. They surround a yellow- orange area occupied by taste buds, the receptory organs of taste. Taste buds are barrel-shaped organs which extend throughout the thickness of the epithelial layer and contain the gustatory sensory cells. Taste buds open onto the surface through gustatory pores seen here as tiny dark holes. Filiform papillae are covered by stratified squamous epithelium apart from their tips which are formed by the fibrous protein keratin. Magnification: x175 at 6x7cm size.
