Papilla vallata on tongue's surface. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a papilla vallata (brown),a site of taste buds, partly surrounded by filiform papillae (bottom). Taste buds are not visible here but they lie below the surface and in the surrounding cavity of the papillae vallate. The taste buds situated on the papillae vallate are sensitive to the bitter taste. There are about 9000 taste buds which are mostly distributed on the tongue's surface. Papillae vallate are 1 to 2mm in diameter and are arranged in a v-shaped pattern at the tongue's root. Magnification: x123 at 6x6cm size | |
